During his tenure, Kiwanis became an International organization by chartering a club in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Hixson played key roles in the early years of Kiwanis while the organization was transformed from a commercial to a community service organization. He remained active in Kiwanis until his death in 1967. Hixson's memory is preserved through the George F. Hixson Award, an award presented by the Kiwanis International Foundation. |
GEORGE F. HIXSON FELLOWSHIP The Kiwanis Internation Foundationestablished the Hixson Fellowship in 1983 to honor George F. Hixson, the first president of Kiwanis International, and to build the endowment fund for the International Foundation. The Worldwide Service Project was adopted by Kiwanis with the goal of virtually eliminating iodine deficiency disorders, the world’s leading cause of preventable mental retardation in children. Each contribution of $1,000 will touch the lives of 20,000 children. Kiwanis International, known for serving the world’s children, has made a commitment to the children of the world to make this program successful. Most recent George F. Hixson Fellows: |
